Dundee Football Club was formed in June 1893 by an
amalgamation of two city teams, Our Boys and East End. The Club's first Scottish
League game on Saturday, 12th August 1893, resulted in a 3-3 draw against
Glasgow Rangers at West Craigie Park - home of Our Boys. Later that season, the
Club moved to more modern facilities at Carolina Port but, in December 1898, a
financial crisis saw the Club come perilously close to extinction. However,
support from local businessmen and the ordinary people of Dundee ensured the
Club's continuation with a new home being found at the Club's current ground
Dens Park, with the official opening taking place on 19th August 1899. In the
hundred plus years since the move to Dens Park, the Club has won many honours
including the Scottish Cup in 1910, the League Cup in 1951, 1952 and 1973, and
under the guidance of Bob Shankly, the First Division Championship in 1962. The
following season the team, spearheaded by the scoring exploits of the
incomparable Alan Gilzean, reached the semi final of the European Cup defeating
Cologne, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht before falling to the eventual winners,
AC Milan. Following several changes in ownership
over the last twenty years, local Dundee businessmen Peter and James Marr took
control of the Club in 1997. The subsequent appointment of Jocky Scott as
Manager along with the signing of several key players saw the Club's four year
spell in the First Division come to an end, with promotion to the newly formed
SPL being achieved comfortably in season 1997/98. The 1998/99 season saw the
Club consolidate its SPL position with a fifth place finish, it's highest in
twenty-five years. The centenary year of the opening of Dens Park saw
considerable change at the ground with the construction of the New Stands
completed in time for the start of season 1999/2000. |
