NOTE: The SmackDown! results will be updated again next week following the Great American Bash PPV.  The next update following that will be a complete reassessment of the top 5 for both shows following SummerSlam.

WWE Heavyweight Championship Rankings
Champion:
John Cena (1st reign, 3 defenses)

1. Chris Jericho - WWE Number 1 Contender/MOP Squad Number 1 Contender
The very first undisputed champion in over 40 years is now the undisputed Number 1 Contender to John Cena's WWE Championship and will get his shot at the gold in 4 weeks at SummerSlam.  Cena has 1 up on Jericho after successfully defending his title against both Jericho & Christian in the Triple Threat at Vengeance and now Chris is looking for revenge.  What's next for these two?  We're not quite sure yet but one thing we do know, with a month to go before SummerSlam, these two multimedia superstars are going to do everything they can to gain the advantage heading into this match.

2. Edge - Money in the Bank Contender
After winning the Gold Rush tournament and losing in his title match against Batista, you'd think Edge would be knocked back down to the bottom of the rankings right?  Wrong.  Why?  Because at WrestleMania Edge went through 5 other superstars in an incredible Money in the Bank 6-Man Ladder match to earn a shot at the WWE Championship anytime within the next twelve months.  Since Edge hasn't used that title shot yet then he can still challenge whoever holds that belt anytime he chooses.  Smart money says that Edge should finish his business with the Big Red Machine before moving on to seek the championship gold that he's been denied since his debut.

3. Carlito - WWE Intercontinental Champion (1st reign, 3 defenses)
Who's next in line after the official Number 1 Contender (Jericho) and the Money in the Bank Contender (Edge)?  Why the Intercontinental Champion of course!  Carlito won that title on his RAW debut after being drafted from SmackDown! and so far all of his defenses have been tainted.  To retain his title Carlito has held the titles, got himself counted out, and gotten himself DQed in title defenses against former champion Shelton Benjamin.  Carlito needs to focus on defending HIS title rather than setting his sights on Cena's title.

4. Kurt Angle
Kurt Angle made his RAW debut in big fashion as the 3rd overall draft pick when he marched to the ring and got in the middle of a confrontation between the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Batista and then-Number 1 Contender Triple H.  Since then Angle's been on a steady win streak, beating Batista & Shawn Michaels in a tag match with Triple H, beating Ric Flair on RAW, and retaining his gold medals in 2 Kurt Angle Invitationals against Matt Striker.  Kurt's only RAW loss came in the form of a victory for HBK at Vengeance in an incredible WrestleMania rematch.  Look for Angle to make his move towards the WWE Championship after SummerSlam and be prepared for an incredible match, whether it be against John Cena or Chris Jericho.

5. Shawn Michaels
Nobody on RAW can match the current streak that Shawn Michaels is on, beating Kurt Angle at Vengeance, teaming with John Cena & Hulk Hogan to beat Christian, Chris Jericho, & Tyson Tomko the next week on RAW, and then teaming with Hulk Hogan to defeat Kurt Angle & Carlito the week after that.  However, after that match Michaels may have ended his own very impressive streak when he delivered the Sweet Chin Music to Hulk Hogan following the match.  A week later, as he was trying to justify the Heartbreak Kid's actions, Michaels gave another WWE legend, Roddy Piper, a taste of his boot.  If Shawn Michaels can pull off a victory over Hogan at SummerSlam it will surely catapult him towards a title shot.

WWE World Tag Team Champions
Champions: The Hurricane & Rosey (1st riegn, 5 defenses)

WWE Women's Champion
Champion: Trish Stratus (6th reign, 2 defenses)

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Rankings
Champion: Batista (1st reign, 5 defenses)

1. John Bradshaw Layfield - WWE Number 1 Contender/MOP Squad Number 1 Contender
It's been 3 months since JBL lost the WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania but next weekend at the Great American Bash JBL will have his chance to regain lost gold, this time in the form of Batista's WWE World Heavyweight Championship.  The Great American Bash has history for JBL because it was at that PPV just 1 short year ago where he defeated Eddie Guerrero in a Strap match to win his first title.  JBL will be looking to extend his GAB steak to 2-0 but he'll first have to get over the mountain that is Batista.

2. Orlando Jordan - WWE United States Champion (1st reign, 6 defenses)
Just like Carlito and his Intercontinental title, Orlando Jordan gets a bid in the top 5 because of his United States Championship.  A shot at Batista and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is the last thing on this young superstar's mind however as this Sunday at the Great American Bash, Orlando will be squaring off to defend his US Title against a man that is arguably the best technical wrestler in the WWE today, Chris Benoit.  Can Orlando stand up to the Rabid Wolverine's assault or will he be just another victim of the Crossface?

3. The Undertaker/Muhammed Hassan
A feud that has been brewing for weeks will come to a head this Sunday at the Great American Bash when The Undertaker faces Muhammed Hassan to decide just who will face the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at SummerSlam.  The Undertaker drew first blood in this battle when he attacked Hassan during his very first SmackDown! after coming over from RAW but Muhammed pushed it to a whole new level when he and a band of his sympathizers brutally attacked the Deadman a week later.  Will Hassan finally stopped being oppressed by America or will the Deadman earn a shot at his 6th championship?

4. Chris Benoit
As the 2nd overall draft pick everyone had high hopes of Benoit on his return to SmackDown! After being eliminated early from the 6-Man match to determine a new SmackDown! champion, most would have assumed that Benoit would drop back down into the card to await his next shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.  Those people, however, were wrong.  Benoit was quickly named the top contender to Orlando Jordan's United States Championship and this Sunday at the Great American Bash the Rabid Wolverine will have his shot.  A victory here will surely show WWE matchmakers that Benoit is ready and willing to have another run at the company's top prize.

5. Christian/Booker T
Christian & Booker T were the last 2 men to lose in the 6-Man match to determine a new SmackDown! champion so you would assume they'd be pushed back down to the bottom of the rankings.  However, after the way these two men have been going at it you have to look at the winner of their upcoming match at the Great American Bash as a shoe-in for a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the near future.  Each man has proven in the past that they are incredible atheletes who have the talent to steal the show on any given night and that's exactly what they'll each be looking to do at GAB.
