EL PASO, Texas -- Jason Williams had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double, and Stefon Jackson scored 22 points as UTEP beat Lipscomb 85-66 in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday night.

UTEP (21-9) hit a season-high 14 3-pointers and never trailed in its first NIT appearance since 2001.

James Poindexter scored 23 points to lead Lipscomb (21-11). Playing in their first postseason tournament as a Division I school, the Bisons trailed big early after shooting just 36 percent from the floor in the first half.

Edgar Moreno and Kevin Henderson each added 13 points for the Miners. UTEP shot 67 percent in the first half -- including 7-of-10 from behind the 3-point line -- to build a 44-23 halftime lead.

Entering the tournament, the most 3-pointers the Miners had made in one game this season was eight.

Jackson, who was 8-of-11 from the floor, made four 3-pointers and Henderson had three. Williams, whose 10 assists were one more than Lipscomb had as a team, made both his 3-point attempts.

Eddie Ard scored 12 points and was the only other Lipscomb player in double figures.
