LAS VEGAS -- UNLV basketball coach Lon Kruger underwent a successful heart procedure at an area hospital Thursday and was resting comfortably in recovery, the school announced.

The 54-year-old Kruger had his routine annual stress test last week, and after doctors conducted further testing earlier this week, blockages were identified and the determination was made to do open-heart bypass surgery. Doctors performed six bypasses during the four-hour surgery.

The school said he could be released early next week to return home for recovery. Kruger said he fully anticipates being back at work and with the team before the start of the season.

"I would like to thank everyone for their concern and support," said his wife, Barb. "The surgery was very successful, Lon is doing well and we are looking forward to his full recovery."

The Runnin' Rebels went 30-7 last season and reached the third round of the NCAA tournament, the school's first time in the regional semifinals in 16 years. Kruger has a 64-34 record in three seasons at UNLV.

In June, Kruger was offered a contract extension that would guarantee him $5.2 million over the next five years.
