TORONTO - A familiar face is returning to the Toronto Argonauts front office.
Bob Nicholson has been named the CFL team's new president and chief executive officer.
Nicholson
spent six seasons with the Argos before stepping down following the '99
season when the team was sold to American businessman Sherwood Schwarz.
Under Nicholson's leadership, the Argos won consecutive Grey Cup titles
in 1996 and '97.
"I am thrilled to be back with a franchise that
has been a passion of mine since my early teen years," Nicholson said
Wednesday in a release. "(Owners) David (Cynamon) and Howard
(Sokolowski) saved this franchise in 2003 and it is their passion and
strength of ownership that made this opportunity so attractive, and the
chance to build for the future a reality."
The team also
announced that Michael (Pinball) Clemons' title is being changed from
CEO to vice-chair. In his new role, Clemons will act as a special
adviser to Nicholson.
Before joining the Argos, Nicholson spent 18 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and also worked with the Montreal Expos, moving to Washington with the franchise when it moved there.
He is not the same Bob Nicholson who is currently president of Hockey Canada.
