MIDLAND, Texas - Texas Tech coach Larry Hays became the fifth NCAA Division I baseball coach to win 1,400 games as the Red Raiders beat Lamar 5-3 on Saturday night.

Hays is now the NCAA's fourth winningest active head coach and the fifth winningest all-time with a career mark of 1,400-753-3.

The four other coaches to reach the 1,400 mark are Texas' Augie Garrido, Gene Stephenson at Wichita State, former Texas coach Cliff Gustafson and Chuck Hartman at Virginia Tech.

Hays came to Texas Tech in 1987 after spending 16 successful seasons at nearby Lubbock Christian University, where he led the Chaps to an NAIA national championship in 1983.

At Texas Tech, the Dora, N.M., native has won four conference titles and led the Red Raiders to nine NCAA tournament appearances.

``Larry has proven that he is one of the best collegiate baseball coaches in the country, and we are proud and pleased that he is our coach at Texas Tech,'' Texas Tech athletics director Gerald Myers said.

Hays will be honored for the milestone when the Red Raiders play Texas-Arlington on Tuesday and again during the final Texas Tech men's basketball game against Oklahoma on March 5.
