LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Cody Hodges sees no reason Texas Tech can't score even more points than the 80 points the Red Raiders put up Saturday night.

Hodges threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns in the first half and Texas Tech embarrassed Division I-AA Sam Houston State 80-21, the Red Raiders' highest scoring game in 52 years.

The fifth-year senior who led the nation in total offense coming into the game, added 80 yards passing and another TD throw in the third quarter to put Tech up 56-7 before backup quarterback Graham Harrell took over.

Hodges finished 26-of-37 for 436 yards.

``I think if we play well and we capitalize on every drive, we can score 100 points,'' Hodges said. ``If we can do it, we need to do it next week.''

Tech next plays another Division I-AA opponent, Indiana State, next week.

Tech's point total was the largest since October 1953, when they put up 71 points against New Mexico A&M, now New Mexico State. In 1925, Tech scored 120 against Wayland Baptist.

Tech's 770 yards was second best in school history to the 775 yards the Red Raiders got against Iowa State in 2003.

The Bearkats were outplayed from the outset. They punted on their first four possessions, all from inside their own 25, and didn't cross midfield until 11:53 in the second quarter.

Getting into Tech (2-0) territory was a gift, though. Tech was hit with a personal foul on a kickoff after going ahead 35-0 on an 11-yard TD pass from Hodges to Joel Filani early in the second quarter.

The Bearkats needed just five plays to capitalize on their good fortune, cutting the margin to 35-7 on a 19-yard run by Stevie Smith. They didn't score again until early in the fourth quarter when Jason Godfrey ran 1 yard to make it 66-14.

The first half numbers told the story succinctly: Sam Houston State had 72 yards of total offense and was penalized 90 yards. They finished with 253 total yards.

``I think we were certainly out-manned. I think that was obvious,'' Bearkat coach Todd Whitten said. ``I was hoping we might play better. There were some bright spots.''

Tech coach Mike Leach said the offense still shows some sloppiness.

``We have plenty of things we need to polish up on,'' he said. ``I think we're trying hard to steadily improve. We're doing a good job pulling the trigger. We just need to balance that out and play a little smarter.''

Taurean Henderson had three short touchdown runs for Texas Tech.

For a second straight game, Hodges favorite target was Robert Johnson, the quarterback-turned-receiver who had a breakout game last week with nine catches for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Against the Bearkats, Johnson caught eight passes for 209 yards, becoming only the seventh Tech player in history to have more than 200 receiving yards in a game. The last time was when Jarrett Hicks got 211 in a 70-35 win over TCU in 2004.

Johnson's longest catch was a 67-yarder from Hodges.

Hicks, who did not play in Tech's 56-3 win over Florida International last week because of what Leach called personal reasons, caught five passes, two for touchdowns, for 73 yards.

``He gives us a downfield receiver, so it was good to see him fired up and ready to go,'' said Hodges, who along with Harrell threw completions to 14 receivers for 650 yards.

Tech scored on 12 of 15 possessions, missing on a field goal in the third quarter and having to punt once in the second quarter. Time ran out while Tech had the ball.

Harrell completed 14 of 17 passes for one touchdown and 208 yards, the longest a 44-yarder to Catron Houston that set up a 1-yard score by Taurance Rawls to give Tech a 66-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Phillip Daugherty, Sam Houston's backup quarterback who transferred from Tech last month, had better stats than starter Wade Pate, but they came against Texas Tech's reserves. Pate finished with 38 passing yards; Daugherty had 157 yards and a touchdown.
