Kerry Fraser and Brad Watson have gotta be the two least popular people in Calgary. After handing the Lightning game 4 on a silver platter, you know that Flames fans don't want them back for game six, or ever, for that matter.
On the game's first shift, Darryl Sydor pins Jarome Iginla into the boards, away from the play. An obvious interference penalty, but one that wasn't called. Then, on what should have been a Calgary powerplay, the Flames get called for two penalties on the same play. Mike Commodore gets called for hooking in front of the net, and then Chris Clark is penalized for a cross check along the boards, with the refs ignoring the retalitory cross check by Nolan Pratt. So much for cracking down on retaliation?
With the postseasons's best powerplay unit on the ice with a two man advantage for a full two minutes, you knew they were gonna score eventually. The goal, as it was, came 56 seconds into the powerplay, with Brad Richards scored on a slap shot, less than three minutes into the game. It would stand up as the game winner.
However, the refs' aid of the Lightning didn't end there. With the Flames pressing for an equalizer, Ville Niemenen gets called for a five minute major penalty - with just 4:13 left in the game. Now, granted, he did knock Vincent Lecavlier into the boards, but there's no way it should've been a five minute major. Had Lecavlier's helmet not come off, and had he not pretended to be hurt, staying down on the ice at the advice of Sydor, it's possible that a major penalty wouldn't have been called. Or perhaps it still would've been. After all, chances are Fraser is probably being offered a Florida beach house by the Tampa organization?
Despite the cheap loss, the series is still tied at 2, and the Flames have a great chance to tie the playoff records for road wins Thursday night in Tampa. If they do so, you know the city will be rockin Saturday when they take home the Cup on home ice!
