Former Steelers offensive lineman Justin Strzelczyk was pronounced dead at the scene of an automobile accident in the New York Thruway Thursday morning after leading troopers on a 40-mile chase.

Strzelczyk died when his vehicle collided with a tanker truck carrying corrosive acid and exploded in a fire.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Strzelczyk drove 15 miles on three tires and a rim of his pickup truck after one of its tires was punctured by metal spikes thrown into the road by troopers.

State troopers had been pursuing Strzelczyk for about an hour following Strzelczyk's involvement in another--but minor-- accident near Syracuse, NY. He was pronounced dead at the scene following the New York Thruway crash.

Strzelczyk was drafted by the Steelers in 1990 out of Maine and was an offensive lineman for the Steelers through the 1999 season.
