GLENDALE, Arizona - The Phoenix Coyotes unveiled their new ownership structure on Thursday.

Jerry Moyes will assume majority ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes as well as the Glendale Arena from Steve Ellman. Coach Wayne Gretzky will retain his minority ownership in the team.

Moyes is no stranger to the Arizona sports scene with previous ownership stakes in the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"I am making a full commitment to the Coyotes organization and the continued success of the Glendale Arena and am very excited to have an opportunity to bring a Stanley Cup championship to the best fans in hockey," Moyes said. "General manager Michael Barnett and club president Doug Moss have done an outstanding job in helping to build a solid foundation and a first class operation."

Moyes also named Arizona native Jeff Shumway to replace Ellman as chief executive officer of the Coyotes, effective immediately.

"Mr. Shumway has the right educational and business background to provide the leadership we need to make our team successful and our arena fan experience second to none," Moyes said.

Phoenix (36-38-5) will not make the playoffs in Gretzky's first year as coach.

Gretzky has said he wants to take some time to reflect on what has been a difficult season for him before making a decision on whether he plans to return in 2006-07.

Gretzky's wife, actress Janet Jones, and associate coach Rick Tocchet were linked to an alleged gambling ring in New Jersey in February. Gretzky also took a leave of absence earlier in the season to be with his ailing mother, who died of cancer.
