EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils signed Kevin Weekes on Thursday to back up record-setting goaltender Martin Brodeur.
Weekes, 32, spent the last two seasons with the New York Rangers, appearing in 46 games and compiling a record of 18-20-5.
Weekes is 96-156-38 with 19 shutouts in nine NHL seasons with Florida, Vancouver, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay, Carolina and the Rangers. His career goals-against average is 2.90.
Weekes' best season came in 2003-2004 with Carolina when he was 23-30-11 with a goals-against average of 2.33.
Brodeur appeared in 78 games in 2006-2007 and set an NHL single-season record with 48 wins, and had a goals-against average of 2.18.
Scott Clemmensen, currently an unrestricted free agent, backed up Brodeur last season, appearing in six games.
