MONTREAL (AP) -- The Montreal Canadiens re-signed goalie David Aebischer to a $1.9 million, one-year contract Wednesday, and also signed free-agent forward Sergei Samsonov to a two-year contract and made two trades.

Montreal traded winger Richard Zednik to Washington for a third-round draft pick in 2007, and acquired winger Mike Johnson from Phoenix for a fourth-round pick next year.

The 28-year-old Aebischer, who accepted his qualifying offer, played in seven games with the Canadiens last season after being acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on the eve of the trading deadline in exchange for goalie Jose Theodore.

Overall, Aebischer went 29-17-2 last season with a 3.09 goals-against average. He'll battle Cristobal Huet for the starting job next season, and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The 27-year-old Samsonov signed with Montreal after helping lead Edmonton to the Stanley Cup final. Samsonov, who went to Edmonton in a deadline-day trade with the Boston Bruins, had 53 points in 74 games last season for the Bruins and Oilers.

Zednik, who began his NHL career with Washington, had 16 goals and 14 assists in 67 games last season, his worst offensive season since joining the Canadiens in March 2001. He had a career-high 31 goals for Montreal in 2002-03.

The 30-year-old Slovak has one more year left on his deal at $1.976 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The 31-year-old Johnson had 16 goals and 38 assists in 80 games for the Coyotes last season. He has 116 goals and 223 assists in 560 career games with Toronto, Tampa Bay and Phoenix. He has one more year left on his contract at $1.9 million.
