MONTREAL (AP) -- Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey agreed to a contract extension Monday through the 2009-10 NHL season.

Montreal also announced that Pierre Gauthier, the head of pro scouting for the Canadiens, will add on the responsibilities of assistant general manager, and that Julien BriseBois will become the team's vice president of hockey operations.

Gainey took over as GM in June 2003 and led the Canadiens to the playoffs in each of his two seasons on the job. He also assumed head coaching duties for the second half of the 2005-06 season.

"Bob has put together a very strong hockey management team, and his leadership is a source of inspiration for our fans and all members of the Canadiens organization," team president Pierre Boivin said in a statement.

Gainey won five Stanley Cups with Montreal during a 16-year playing career. He also won a championship as general manager of the Dallas Stars in 1999.

Gauthier joined the Canadiens in July 2003 as director of professional scouting after stints as general manager with the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

The Canadiens also hired Michel Boucher, Denis Morel and Doug Gibson as scouts.
