BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - James Hardy caught three touchdown passes, and quarterback Kellen Lewis produced his second straight fourth-quarter rally as Indiana upset No. 15 Iowa 31-28 on Saturday.

It was the highest-ranked opponent the Hoosiers (4-3, 2-1 Big Ten) have beaten in nearly 20 years, dating to a 31-10 victory over No. 9 Ohio State on Oct. 10, 1987. Players celebrated by running to the student section and jumping into the crowd.

The victory also ended Indiana's three-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes (5-2, 2-2).

"This is a young team just gaining confidence," coach Terry Hoeppner said. "Obviously after last week, this is even bigger. Our football program is a shooting rocket."

Hardy, who was suspended earlier this season and missed two games, caught eight passes for 104 yards, including 20-yard TD pass with 9:51 left to give Indiana the lead for good. Hardy also became the first Hoosiers player with three TD receptions in one game since Duane Gunn on Oct. 8, 1983 against Minnesota.

Lewis, who led Indiana on a last-minute drive at Illinois last week, guided to two big scores against the Hawkeyes. He took Indiana on a 50-yard march in 51 seconds to set up a field goal just before halftime and delivered a six-play, 80-yard drive for the winning score.

He finished 19-of-25 for 255 yards.

The Hoosiers overcame a series of first-half miscues.

The Hawkeyes capitalized on fumbles by Josiah Sears and Lewis in the first half to score 14 points and eventually build a 21-7 lead.

Like last week, though, the Hoosiers found a way to come back.

Indiana scored 10 points in the final four minutes of the first half to close to 21-17 at halftime, and then controlled the game in the second half.

Drew Tate was 23-of-40 for 292 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and Damian Sims carried 22 times for 94 yards and scored twice for Iowa.

The balanced attack produced 467 total yards, but it wasn't enough for a victory before their showdown with No. 4 Michigan next week.

Sims opened the scoring with a 1-yard TD run, and Lewis answered with a 16-yard TD pass to Hardy — his first touchdown catch of the season.

Tate then threw a 19-yard TD pass to uncovered tight end Scott Chandler, and the Iowa quarterback threw the key block to spring Herb Grigsby on a 25-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. At that point, Iowa led 21-7.

Indiana, however, turned the game. Lewis scored on a 2-yard run with 3:25 left in the half, and Austin Starr, last week's hero, connected on a career-long 46-yarder into a brisk wind as time expired in the half.

Indiana took the lead on Hardy's diving 23-yard TD catch late in the third quarter, but Tate responded with a methodical 77-yard drive with Sims scoring on a 1-yard run to make it 28-24.

The Lewis-to-Hardy connection had one more answer. Hardy got wide open for a 20-yard score with 9:51 left, and Indiana sealed the victory on Will Meyers' one-handed interception with 2:53 to play.
