Thoughts on a good win and a suspect defense.

Well, in the end, we achieve a good win against a team that plays well at home.....I can't believe it was as close as it was, but of course, there are reasons for this....

a) Our defense REALLY needs some work. I am appalled at our inability to make defensive adjustments during the game. How many wide-open three's did they have and knock down....they had them after-free throws, during transition, and at the end of the game when we can't give up three pointers.....they had better fix this quick....our offense was pretty good today and this shows just how bad our defense was. If Banks did not absolutely catch fire in the second half, we probably lose this game by 15.

b) Overall, free-throw shooting was pretty good today...and we came up big in the end to seal the deal, but how many front ends of a 1-and-1 are we gonna miss?

However, offensively we were much better today....

a) Elliott Poole was a beast....this guy is starting to show signs of why he was recruited by schools like UConn. If he can avoid fouls and stay in the game for us, he will continue to be a monster on the boards....

b) Stefanov made some huge buckets, Armond showed signs of improvement, and McGee, although he didn't start, played the majority of the minutes, and showed poise at the end by making some big free-throws....

c) And Banks was just ridiculous....how many times have we seen him throw 20 up in one half....well, add one more to the list....

In any case, we need to improve greatly on defense or we will continue to have these "heart-attack" games on the road. In the post-game interview, Banks says "I was taught that defense wins games"....well defense did not win this game...it was the offense....big free throws, huge three-pointers, and many important offensive boards....

I thought we'd be able to go in there and blow them out and I give UNCW credit for hanging in there. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the performance, and I'm glad we got out with a "W". Now I just hope we don't go to Duke on national TV and lay an egg and get stomped by 40.
