Week 14 Predictions

Last Week: 0-4
Season to Date: 29-19 (.604)
Just as the Calgary Stampeders' season started going down the drain last week, so did mine. But while I did have an embarrassing Week 13, at least I didn't suffer any injuries, which gives me a much better chance of redeeming myself this week than the Stamps have with Akili Smith at quarterback.
The first game of Week 14 is a toughie, as the Toronto Argonauts head into Commonwealth Stadium to face the Edmonton Eskimos. The two teams have nearly identical records, and are facing each other for the first time this season. The Eskies are coming in off of two straight wins over Montreal, while the Argos barely hung on to beat Winnipeg last week after amassing a big first-half lead. While Edmonton is the home team, I like Toronto in this one. The Eskimo offence is extremely one-dimensional, and they're facing the top pass defence in the league, so I'm taking the Argo secondary over Ricky Ray, although it should be a close game.
The Saturday CBC tripleheader kicks off with two slumping teams, as the Montreal Alouettes meet the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. The Als have lost their last two games, both against Edmonton, while the Riders have dropped their last three. And while the BC Lions were able to beat them on their home turf last week, I don't think the Riders will have as much trouble with Montreal, even if Anthony Calvillo is back behind centre. One of these teams will put an end to their losing streak this week, and I think it'll be Saskatchewan.
The second of three Saturday matchups pits the Hamilton Tiger-Cats against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Winnipeg. While the Ti-Cats are coming off a win last week, and have beaten Winnipeg earlier this year, I think that the Bombers offence is just too strong for them, and should overpower the Hamilton defence. Winnipeg wins this one by a comfortable margin.
And finally, the late-nite matchup, with a 10 pm Eastern start time, features the Calgary Stampeders against the BC Lions. The Lions have had the Stamps' number ever since Wally Buono left Calgary for BC, and are especially tough to beat at BC Place. If Henry Burris was starting for Calgary, I might give the Stamps a chance against third-string QB Jarious Jackson, but with Akili Smith behind centre, the Lions will eat them alive. As a Stamps fan, this one's gonna be painful to watch.
CFL Editor Greg Harris is trying to get negotiations going between the Calgary Stampeders and Ryan Leaf, in order to see whether he'll be as much of a CFL bust as Akili Smith is.
