SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- Free-agent defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev signed a two-year deal with the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.

An ankle injury limited the 34-year-old Karpovtsev to 24 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season. He was traded in March and completed the season with the New York Islanders. He finished the season with eight assists.

Karpovtsev previously played under Panthers coach Mike Keenan during his rookie year in 1994 when the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup.

The Moscow native has 34 goals, 154 points and 426 penalty minutes in an 11-year career with the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Blackhawks and Islanders.
