Tomas Holmstrom had two goals, Zetterberg a goal and an assist and Datsyuk three assists for NHL-leading Detroit in regulation. Dominik Hasek made 27 saves.

Alexander Ovechkin, Jeff Schultz and Semin scored for Washington. Olie Kolzig stopped 27 shots, and Alexander Semin had a shootout goal for the Capitals.

All three Red Wing players used the same move, a fake and a backhand shot to beat Kolzig in the shootout.

Hasek stopped Ovechkin, who skated in alone, 3:27 into overtime.

Semin's power-play goal tied the game 3-3 with 1:34 left in the third period.

Holmstrom, who returned after missing two games with a sore knee, tipped in Datsyuk's pass for his 16th goal to give Detroit a 3-2 lead with 4:43 left.

Zetterberg tied the game at 2 with a power-play goal with 9:34 left in the second period. He beat Kolzig with a one-time slap shot from the right circle for his 24th goal.

Holmstrom opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:37 into the game. He tipped in Nicklas Lidstrom's pass for his 15th goal of the season.

Ovechkin tied it with a power-play goal of his own at 9:58, 2 seconds after Hudler was whistled for holding. Michael Nylander won the face-off, in the right circle, back to Ovechkin, who then put a wrist shot in off of Hasek for his 24th goals.

Schultz gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead with 26 seconds left in the opening period when his shot from the point deflected off Holmstrom, who slid in an attempt to black the shot, into the air and fluttered past Hasek into the net.

Notes:@ Linesman Steve Barton left the game 1:10 into the opening period after Zetterberg checked Washington's Nicklas Backstrom into Barton, whose jaw was slammed into the glass. He was down on the ice for about a minute as Detroit trainer Piet Van Zant attended to him, eventually helping him off the ice. Barton returned in the second period ... It was Ovechkin's first game at Joe Louis Arena. The Capitals last played in Detroit Nov. 24, 2003, and Ovechkin is in his third season. ... Red Wings C Kris Draper (knee) and LW Kirk Maltby (back) didn't play. ... Red Wings RW Mikael Samuelsson injured his elbow when he was checked hard into the boards by Donald Brashear 9:41 into the second period. Brashear received a roughing penalty and Zetterberg scored. Sauelsson returned in the third period.
