Sunday night at the Hard Justice pay per view, TNA moved in a direction that many saw coming but may breathe a much needed breath of fresh air into the Orlando, Florida promotion. Since his debut in TNA, Christian Cage had portrayed a fan favorite or face persona. Many longtime Christian fans felt that perhaps this was the wrong way to depict the character that was once hugely popular in WWE despite being a villain or heel wrestler.
During the main event of the card, featuring former NWA World Champion Sting challenging current TNA kingpin Jeff Jarrett for the highly coveted NWA title, Christian switched gears and used Jarrett's weapon of mass destruction known as the guitar to most assaulted Sting and cost him to lose the match and Jarrett to retain the title.
This is a solid move on TNA's part as it serves to setup a storyline feud between two of the best promo artists in the game of wrestling today. Christian, as many fans will testify, is at his best on the mic when he is working as a heel and acting like a CLB or Creepy Little Bastard.
Sting, likewise, is at his best when he has someone working against him who he does not have to carry, but who can challenge his creative energy both in the ring and on the microphone.
Christian is the one man in TNA who can stand toe to toe with Sting, both verbally and physically, and this as far as I can tell will be a win-win situation for the fans of not only TNA but for those long term fans of Christian who have enjoyed his and Sting's work over the years.
This is a feud that can help to elevate TNA into the national spotlight and serve to attract new viewers for the promotion which will aid the promotion in their efforts to boost declining ratings and build their fan base. With the company's top event of the year, Bound For Glory, taking place this year in Detroit, this may be just the right feud at the right time for a company looking to move its product upward towards high ratings, increased buy rates for their pay per view events and more tickets sold for their October event.
I as a long time fan of wrestling am excited by this storyline feud between the two and would like to know your thoughts on it and the current TNA product. I encourage you to invite a friend to sit down and watch this week's show and send me your thoughts and feedback on it.
I always look forward to hearing from you, the reader, on your thoughts on the current wrestling scene product and who knows with a little luck maybe we'll meet each other here on the wrestling section on the forums.
Until next time, keep on watching TNA and other wrestling that you enjoy and I'll be back soon with a new in-depth column on all the mat mayhem that takes place between the ropes.
