CLEVELAND (AP) -- The NCAA is investigating possible rules violations by the Cleveland State basketball program.

Athletic department spokesman Brian McCann said Friday that staff members being investigated worked for the university before coach Mike Garland was hired in April 2003 to replace Rollie Massimino.

Massimino, who led Villanova to the 1985 NCAA title, began coaching at Cleveland State in 1996.

Cleveland State is cooperating with the NCAA and is conducting a review of possible violations, athletic director Lee Reed said in a statement.

Massimino could not be reached for comment. Messages seeking comment were left for listings of Roland Massimino in Jupiter, Fla., and Lumberville, Pa. Calls to another listing in Jupiter, Fla., weren't answered.

McCann said the investigation is an informal inquiry. The university hasn't received an official letter of inquiry from the NCAA.

``They're letting us conduct the investigation, but they're working with us,'' McCann said.

The NCAA doesn't comment on any potential or ongoing investigations, spokeswoman Kay Hawes said.
