Basanez entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers in 2006 after a record-setting career at Northwestern. He appeared in only one game that season, completing 6 of 11 passes for 56 yards and an interception. He missed the 2007 season with a wrist injury and spent last year on the Panthers’ practice squad.

At Northwestern, he set school records for yards passing (10,580) and total offense (11,576), completions (913) and tied the mark for touchdown passes (44).
