CALGARY - Calgary Stampeders fullback Teyo Johnson was back with his team Saturday, less than 48 hours after he was stabbed during a
downtown rave.
Johnson, from White Rock, B.C., will not play in Sunday's Western
semifinal against the Edmonton Eskimos, but stood on the McMahon
Stadium sidelines as his teammates prepared for the playoff game.
The
27-year-old felt it was important to show that he wasn't badly
injured, so the incident would be less of a distraction heading into
the game.
"Luckily no vitals were hit and it's just a flesh wound," Johnson said.
"That was a big thing for me to come here and let everybody know
what exactly happened and I'm fine and we need to get this victory."
Police said Johnson was stabbed in the lower back during a skirmish
at the Calgary Stampede grounds around 1:15 a.m. on Friday. Johnson,
six foot five and 206 pounds, was taken to hospital with a single stab
wound deemed non life-threatening.
Police said a knife was recovered from the scene. One person was arrested and later released.
Johnson had 18 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season.
"It's an unfortunate incident," he said. "We can all learn a lesson
that you've got to be careful even in places that are set up to be
safe. Things like this can happen and it happened to me."
Johnson was not breaking team curfew by attending the rave. Calgary
head coach John Hufnagel said he wasn't angry with Johnson for being
there.
"It was just an unfortunate situation to happen to one of our
players," he said. "Teyo wanted to play in this game, but I would not
allow that for obvious reasons.
"He did speak to the team this morning and I don't want to say he
apologized, but he did tell his teammates he did not want to be a
distraction."
