CALGARY - Calgary fullback Teyo Johnson is recovering after being
stabbed in the back at a rave party early Friday and will miss Sunday's
West Division semifinal against the Edmonton Eskimos.
Police said Johnson was stabbed in the lower back during a fracas at
the Calgary Stampede grounds around 1:15 a.m. Officers were already on
the scene when the skirmish started, according to Duty Insp. Rob
Williams of the Calgary Police Service.
"Somehow
an altercation broke out with a group of people," said Williams. "The
officers approached where this melee had happened and one noticed blood
on the back of this victim's shirt. He was transported to hospital with
a single stab wound which was not life threatening."
John Hufnagel, the Stampeders coach and general manager, said he talked to Johnson by phone on Friday.
"He received a knife wound, spent the night in a hospital and will
be doubtful obviously for this football game," Hufnagel said after
practice. "The wound is not serious. It didn't hit any vital organs and
that's what I know. That's why he wasn't at practice today (Friday) and
right now we're concerned about Teyo.
"It did sound positive that he'll have a quick recovery."
Williams said a knife was recovered from the scene and one person was arrested but later released and is not a suspect.
"We have no one under arrest or who has been charged at this point,
but police are still following up leads and we'll be working on this
case file for a few days yet," Williams added.
Johnson had 18 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season.
