AT LAST! Pigs Can Fly, Hell Is Frozen, Scott Eats Crow: Red Sox Are Champions

The headline on Boston.com on Wednesday night said it best: “AT LAST! Pigs can fly, hell is frozen, the slipper finally fits, and Impossible Dreams really can come true. The Red Sox have won the World Series.”

And now I have some proverbial crow to eat.

Last week, in an editorial here on MOP Squad Sports, I congratulated the Red Sox for doing what no team had ever done, win four in a row after losing the first three, defeating the New York Yankees in the process for the American League Pennant.

The only thing left to do was to win the World Series by going out there and to “actually show me something”. Not only did they show me something, they did it while dancing on Babe Ruth’s grave and mocking everything that was sacred about the hallowed “Curse of the Bambino” in the process. This was supposed to be the year they do it but do it in a way with high drama and scare tactics from the sportscasters, that when they finally did, we would be jumping up and down screaming because they would have won when they should not have.

And I could not be happier in the process.

The Red Sox won eight straight postseason games. In fact, the only postseason games they lost were the three to the Yankees. The World Series became anti-climatic after the Sox beat the Yankees and turned what was supposed to be a competition that would end in possible victory or shame in Fenway Park, into a coronation of letting go 86 years of heartache, pain, and frustration.

The Babe is turning over in his grave; Red Sox fans for all time can rest easy. Marvel in it, revel in it and just mark the next date on the calendar, the Fenway Park home opener on April 11, 2005. That day, whatever form the Sox are in, will raise their World Series Champions banner with the New York Yankees sitting in the visiting dugout.

It is a new day for Red Sox fans and Yankee Fans. The curse has been reversed, “86-Ed” if you will. And now the two biggest rivals in sports have to find something new to brag about.

Just remember, since 2000, the Red Sox have won a World Series, the Yankees have not. Time will tell if this is the start of a different curse. In the meantime Boston, live it up, you earned this one!

Yes indeed. I am eating crow and it never tasted so good.

Now if we can just get rid of “The Curse of the Billy Goat”….
