CALGARY - B.C. Lions tailback Martell Mallett was named the CFL's outstanding rookie Thursday night at the league's awards banquet.

The six-foot, 195-pound Mallett had a stellar first season with B.C., rushing for 1,240 yards and eight TDs. Mallett, 23, ran for a club-record 213 yards against Montreal on Sept. 4, 2009.

Mallett joined the Lions after playing his college football with the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions.

Defensive back Jonathan Hefney of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was the other finalist for the award. Henfey had 66 tackles and four interceptions to earn the East Division nomination.

Voting for the award was conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada and CFL head coaches.
